The theft of electricity by some customers is one of the main factors hindering the operation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Although the company did discover these culprits throughout the year, it is developing more strategies to expose such violations.

The management launched a monthly anti-electricity theft campaign, the first event was in October to help reduce business losses and improve revenue.

After the second exercise in November, areas such as Prampram and Ashaiman in the Tema area began to make progress.

Eric Adjetey Mensah, also acting manager, told Prampram's regional engineer Joy News that the monthly exercise is a much-needed exercise.

"We have a monitoring team that monitors electricity meters twice a year, but it is difficult to achieve full coverage at the scale of the community. However, the monthly exercises will make a big difference," he said.

The Prampram district extends from Kpone to Sege and has approximately 50,000 customers.

According to the new directive, managers in the field of company operations should participate in the work of increasing the number of people on site, leaving key employees to take care of customers.

"I can tell you that we are gradually discovering some theft, which is part of our business losses," Ing. Adjetey Mensah said.

Of the 54 residential customers interviewed, 10 were said to be illegally connected to the power supply because the income protection team had taken over them.

"Customers must stop illegal activities. ECG can only operate effectively when you pay for electricity use. However, our regional budget for 2022 is about 20 million pounds. If people don't pay for electricity, where does the government get the money?" he asked .

In the Tema area, the Prampram area is one of the areas where it is believed that someone deliberately damaged the transformer.

Between September 24 and November 29 this year, a total of 9 transformers (including 3 private transformers) were destroyed in the area, resulting in a power outage.

For the Ashaiman district, the monthly exercises proceed smoothly.

Ashaiman area engineer Ato Buaful said that because the company did the necessary work, three residents illegally connected the power source during the exercise last month.

"The unfortunate aspect of the illegal connection is that your house may catch fire. Pay your bills, if any. We are there to serve customers," he promised

Unlike previous locations where ECG staff were attacked, customers in Prampram and Ashaiman generally cooperated, except for a few houses that were inaccessible due to door locks.
